Neuquén
At the vanguard in fossil extraction and study –especially involving land vertebrates and marine invertebrates- the province of Neuquén invites visitors to step into the world of these Patagonian giants. The Lago Barreales Paleontology Center and the museums at Villa El Chocón, Plaza Huincul and Rincón de los Sauces exhibit incredible findings which never fail to surprise visitors. The largest carnivorous dinosaur found to date and an herbivore of gigantic dimensions, petrified footprints and dinosaur eggs in their nests are unique phenomena characteristic of the Dinosaur Steppe in Neuquén.
Some of the museums in Neuquén offer recreational activities with special proposals for children, expert-guided tours, or the experience of conditioning bones alongside paleontologists.
Río Negro
In the province of Río Negro, traveling from the city of Cipoletti visitors can access the Cretaceous Park, located amidst imposing and arid landscapes, where fossil remains and petrified footprints of prehistoric animals are on display.
“The Amphitheater” with its moonlike scenery and gulches shows different geological layers, from 100 to 60 million years old and dinosaur fossils dating back 100 million years. 75 million year old marine species, such as remains of plesiosaurs and mosasaurs have been found in the Bajo de Santa Rosa, 150 km from the town of Lamarque .
This province also offers interesting museums to visit: The “Carlos Ameghino” Provincial Museum in Cipolletti, the Lamarque Municipal Museum and the Luis Beltrán Municipal Museum.
Chubut
One of the most prominent in all of South America in its specialty, the Egidio Feruglio Paleontology Museum (MEF) in the city of Trelew next to the Bryn Gwyn Paleontological Park offer a combination of science and entertainment. The MEF possesses an important exhibit, which is enhanced by educational programs for paleontology and natural sciences enthusiasts from all over the world. In addition, this museum invites visitors to enjoy nighttime, cultural and musical activities as well as special day trips and visits. Programs dedicated to children allow them to play while they are learning in special rooms and laboratories. Likewise, the Sarmiento Petrified Forest, with its millenary tree trunks, which bear witness to prehistoric times, and the Valley of the Giants, where the life of dinosaurs has been artificially represented, create scenery visitors to the region should not miss.
