The Old Patagonian Express “La Trochita”
The Old Patagonian Express “La Trochita” [narrow gauge train], an impeccable museum piece from the 1920's that unites the steppe with the Andes . With its original steam locomotive, its cars furnished with wooden benches near the salamander stove, you can travel from El Maitén or from Esquel, its head station along 400 kilometers within the province of Chubut. At each stop you will get deeper into the customs that sealed the history of this area of Patagonia . Large train workshops and a museum catch the sight of visitors in El Maitén station. The vastness of the steppe, the regional music and handcrafts welcome visitors at the Nahuel Pan station.
In Leleque, the Museum of Indigenous Cultures exhibits through archeological discoveries and rock paintings over 13,000 years of Patagonian history in a place that brings to life the ancient times with the sound of the wind.
In the province of Río Negro there is a monthly program of excursions that depart from the Ingeniero Jacobacci main station.
Patagonian Train
In the province of Río Negro, to traverse Patagonia from the Atlantic coast to the Andes, the Patagonian Train covers the trip Viedma - Bariloche and back, taking you through the wild steppe alongside picturesque towns. A real trip that reveals the wonders of the Patagonian weather and geography.
With the Andean peaks dissecting the horizon, the train comes into the city of San Carlos de Bariloche – one of the region's most recognized tourist destinations- where it finishes its route.
Historical steam locomotive
Departing from the train station in the city of San Carlos de Bariloche, the awesome sight of the Nahuel Huapi Lake marks the first part of the ride aboard the historical steam train. Its first stop at the Ñirihuau station brings us to the imposing sight of the Catedral and Tronador peaks. The train has a Scottish steam locomotive from 1912 where you can still read the make “North Brigie” N° 121.
At the call of “all aboard”, recreating old customs, it sets off again to Los Juncos (Perito Moreno) station where you can visit the old railway buildings and take a walk to the Los Juncos lagoon. An exquisite journey that makes us feel close to the history of the pioneers of the Argentine Patagonia.
Train to the end of the World
With its elegant cars and large windows, the Train to the end of the World rides through the Tierra del Fuego National Park, crossing through magnificent woods of ñires [Antarctic beeches], lengas [Nothofagus pumilio] and coihues [Nothofagus pumilio]. It departs only 8 kilometers from Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, and at the bank of the Pipo River, among winding curves it climbs a steep slope to reach Macarena, the first stop on this trip to the farthest corners of the Patagonian south. Passengers may get off to enjoy the scenery offered by the waterfalls of the same name. In the second stop, among the remains of an old sawmill, visitors find a part of this province's history and its famous jail. A detour to the river bank takes you to the Yamana camp. Bordering a large turba [a raised sphagnum moss bog typical of Tierra del Fuego ], the train ends its route amid the lush nature that surrounds the station “ Estación Terminal Parque Nacional ” [National Park Terminal Station].
